FAQs

If I am a transfer student into UT -- or if I am a UT student changing my major to Plant Sciences -- what sorts of things should I be aware of ?

We welcome students who wish to transfer to our department from other universities and from other UT departments. Our advisors work with students to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Much of your coursework will likely transfer in to UT and count toward fulfilling degree requirements. But no two school's requirements are identical, and so probably not all of the courses from your prior university will replace a UT course requirement.

Upon admission, the university determines which courses taken at another univeristy will satisfy particular UT course requirements. This is done by university transcript evaluators.

You will be assigned a faculty advisor when entering our department, and you can then work with your advisor to determine if any of your other courses taken at your prior university might fulfill other departmental, college or university course requirements. See course petitions.

There are two types of course requirements: university-wide General Education (Gen Ed) requirements and department requirements. The Gen Ed requirements are listed near the beginning of each year's undergraduate catalog. Departmental requirements vary with the departmental concentration you select, and these are shown in each catalog year as well as on our web pages for each concentration.
    Plant Sciences requirements by concentration:  2006-7   2005-6   2004-5   2003-4
    Gen Ed Requirements 2006-07  2005-06  2004-05

Biology 111-112. One thing that often comes up is the question of whether general biology course will substitute for our requirements for introductory botany. To receive an adequate background in plant biology, we require all of our students to take Biology 111-112. We will sometimes allow a good general biology course to replace Biology 111. Note that students may not receive credit for both Biology 101-102 and Biology 111-112.

Economics requirement. UT's introductory economics course is a 4-hour course. Introductory courses at other universities are often 3-hour courses. This means that your 3-hour economics course will not transfer into UT as Economics 201 (4) but will come in as Economics LD. Your 3-hour economics course will substitute for our departmental economics requirement (it may require a college petition for catalogs dated before 2007). Your 3-hour economics LD course can also count as one of your sociology Gen Ed requirements if you want it to, but you and your advisor must prepare a Gen Ed petition for this to occur.

Math course requirements . Another discipline to pay close attention to is the university's Gen Ed math requirements. These vary with concentration, and many cannot be taken out of sequence or cannot substitute for one another. It is a good idea to carefully examine (1) the math requirements for your concentration, (2) the math course descriptions in the catalog, and (3) the listing showing courses that are approved as General Education courses in the catalog you choose to graduate by.
