New Design Lab Helps Students
| |
Last semester marked the beginning of a new era for the Plant Sciences Landscape Design Concentration. In addition to students retaining the existing studio in Ellington, we now have a new feather in our cap as our new studio in the Biotechnology Annex (hopefully soon to be renamed) gains notoriety. This space is state of the art encompassing 2000 square feet and housing 19 drawing tables and 6 computers. Associate Professor Garry Menendez beams when he arrives at school each day and enjoys the luxury of having this new facility a mere 7 paces from his existing office.
Students seem to be very pleased with the space as it houses lockers and computers with various landscape design programs and internet access. A video camera, overhead projector and TV enable Garry to show students the smallest detail as he demonstrates various design and graphic techniques. Being very close to the UT Gardens also has its benefits as students are able to look out the windows to be inspired by this beauty and temporarily escape the asphalt jungle so prevalent on other parts of the campus.
Perhaps the biggest perk in Mr. Menendez's eyes is the constantly changing display of student work which adorns most walls. "All I have to do is say 'I expect no less than this' as I point to exceptional designs created by recent students to quickly set the standard for my courses. Come by and visit sometime.
