Outstanding Freshman Kyley Hampton Dickson November 2009
Gamma Sigma Delta's Outstanding Freshman Award went to Kyley Dickson Plant Sciences - Turfgrass Science and Management. College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Freshman Award- Recipient shows evidence of scholarship by having the highest cumulative grade point average upon completion between 30 and 45 hours with at least 18 of the hours received while enrolled at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

Spotlight on Innovative Faculty November 2009
Garry Menendez records his lectures in a Landscape Graphics course where the live video of his drawing is projected on a big screen during the class. Menendez has his video lectures converted to podcasts and posted on iTunesU. Having the help of OIT’s Instructional Development and Training staff, Menendez does not need to get involved in the technical aspects of the video and podcast production.

Organic Farm offers internships to students. October 2009
The UT Department of Ag is looking for five interns for the 2010 spring semester.The paid internship will be nine months long. Interns are required to make a 16-hour commitment per week to farm and market.

The Glorious gardens of Italy! May 2009
Garry Menendez and his students took on their mini-term tour of Italy as they encountered some phenomenal sights and amazing people. During the last two weeks of May, participants in this 3 hour credit course visited over 20 famous gardens and countless historic sights. More |

UT Gardens Plant Sale a Big Success! 5-18-09
The University of Tennessee Gardens held their semi-annual plant sale May 8 and 9. A wide selection of flowers, shrubs and trees were available. The University of Tennessee Gardens located in Knoxville and Jackson are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Their mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, collections, educational programs, and research trials. |

Herb Society of Nashville Scholarship 5-8-09
The Herb Society of Nashville has awarded 3 worthy students each with an $833 scholarship for their 2009-2010 academic year.

Award for Undergraduate and Creative Achievement 4-19-09
Adam Gobrecht, senior in Plant Sciences Landscape Design, was one of three award winners representing the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the recent Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EURCA). Adam’s master plan depicting the Stanley Botanic Garden and Arboretum was praised by the judges for its sensitivity to site, graphic presentation and environmentally sustainable message. Mr. Gobrecht is weighing his next professional move post graduation and is contemplating applying for acceptance in UT’s new Master of Landscape Architecture program. Congratulations to Adam and his faculty mentor, Garry Menendez.

Plant Sciences Students in top 10 at the GCSAA Turf Bowl 2-16-09
The Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America recently held its annual educational conference in New Orleans from February 4th through the 7th. Two and four year universities and colleges sent teams to compete in the 15th annual Collegiate Turf Bowl, a comprehensive exam evaluating students knowledge on a number of different turfgrass management topics. A total of 83 teams took part in the competition, and the University of Tennessee finished in the top ten (9th) for the first time ever. The University of Tennessee team consisted of Lucas Freshour, Miller Johnston, Jimmy Humston and Sean Elverd.

Horticulture students participate in Southeatern Flower Show 1-27-09
Thanks to Dr. Sue Hamilton
and with the assistence of Garden's Curator, James Newburn several of our students built vertical gardening walls to display at the Southestern Flower Show in Atlanta, Ga. Julie Hogg says"I am very encouraged with what we’re trying to suggest with our booth...that people should take notice of renewable, sustainable materials and energy. Our demonstration of a vertical garden wall is prescient and informed by the need to examine renewable and sustainable materials and methods."
The students have a news feature in the Friday 13, 2009 issue of the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Student Challenge Team Wins second Place 1-17-09
our student challenge team finished in 2nd place in the National Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Student Challenge this past week. Team members included Lucas Graham, Marty Wallace, Lucas Freshour, and Sean Elverd. Also, the head field manager for UT, Bob Campbell, CSFM, received STMA’s highest honor, the Harry C. Gill Memorial Award.
