Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQs resource under construction winter of 2005-2006.
If I am a transfer student into UT -- or if I am a UT student changing my major to Plant Sciences -- what sorts of things should I be aware of ?
Much of your coursework will likely transfer in to UT and count toward fulfilling degree requirements. But no two school's requirements are identical, and so probably not all of the courses from your prior university will replace a UT course requirement. Can Plant Sciences majors apply for scholarships?
Yes. Plant Sciences students are eligible for departmental, college and university-wide scholarships, ranging from $100 to $6,000 per year. More info>>
Course requirements change a little bit each year; which catalog should I use to determine exactly what I need to graduate?
You get to choose! You can choose to follow the requirements for any catalog year in which you have been enrolled at the University of Tennessee (limited to the last six years). Courses you completed >6 years ago count, but you have to select a catalog from among the last six years, to graduate under. Ask your advisor for more details.
What is DARS? And what good is it to me?
DARS is nice. It stands for Degree Audit Requirements System. It is the software program that the university uses to allow you and your advisor to track your academic progress: what course requirements you've met and which you still need to complete.
People talk about "running a DARS" report. It is a good idea to do this for yourself every semester or so, to audit your progress toward your degree.
Can I graduate with two plant sciences concentrations?
Yes, if graduating under the 2004-2005 or later catalogs (e.g. p.47 of 2004 catalog):
"Multiple Concentrations
Multiple concentration listings may appear on a student's transcript when a minimum of 12 distinct credit hours differentiate one concentration from another."
What kinds of jobs do plant sciences majors get when they graduate?
Now that is an exciting question... with some really exciting answers. See our Careers Page for just a smattering of the sorts of careers our graduates have entered.
How do I schedule an appointment with a plant sciences advisor?
Please contact our advising assistant, Sandy Kitts, at 974-7324. More about advising >>>
What are the course requirements for each concentration?
These vary somewhat from catalog to catalog: 2006-7 2005-6 2004-5 2003-4
