May, 2009. Dr. Vince Pantalone, Dr Dennis West and Dr. Carl Sams have been featured in an article on the UT Alumni website entitled "Can Better Soybeans Lead to Better Water Quality?" whichoutlines a method that allows them to select for a certain trait in soybean breeding. This trait is beneficial to the growth and development of farm animals that consume feed made from soybeans, and it boosts the efficiency of livestock operations. An added plus is that this characteristic can also reduce phosphorus pollution, leading to cleaner ground and surface waters.

May, 2009. One of our students, Blake Joyce, has been chosen by the Center for International Education to receive one of the W.K. McClure Scholarships for the Study of World Affairs. The W. K. McClure Scholarship Program offers UTK students financial awards of up to $5,000 to support study, research and creative projects abroad aimed at enhancing and promoting education for world responsibility. Blake's project studies species in the genus Copaifera that produce an oleoresin which can be used as diesel fuel.  Most of the species are native to Brazil and the oleoresin is an important commodity in Brazil, so it was felt it was important to do in-country work on these species with Brazilian researchers.  To further this goal, they have established an international collaboration with Dr. Marcos Buckeridge at the University of Sao Paulo to collect oleoresin from different species of Copaifera to test their chemical and physical properties.  Tthis will be the start of Blake's dissertation research.  This effort is a smaller portion of a larger collaborative effort between Dr. Neal Stewart, Dr. Feng Chen, Dr. Hani Al-Ahmad at An-Najah National University in Nablus, Palestine, and Dr. Joshua Yuan at Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas.

April, 2009. One of our new graduate students, David McIntosh, submitted a successful proposal to the UT Office of Research  and has been awarded a summer 2009 graduate research assistantship.  David's project proposal involves 1) Evaluating planting methods, seeding rates, and planting timings for Teffgrass in Tennessee, and 2) Enhancing declining stands of alfalfa using Teffgrass.  His major professor will be Gary Bates.

March, 2009. Building better beans: UT scientists work toward soybeans that are better for the environment.  News story on Vince Pantalone's program.

February, 2009. Congratulations again to graduate student Dustin Lewis who took 1st place in the Masters Student Oral/Paper competition at the 62nd  Southern Weed Science Society of America  (SWSSA) Conference in Orlando, FL earlier this month.  His paper was entitled “Evaluation of various graminicides for selective bermudagrass control in zoysiagrass fairways.”  Authors also included J.S. McElroy, J.C. Sorochan, J.T. Brosnan, and G.K. Breeden.  Dr. Greg Armel’s student Javier Vargas won 1st place overall in the photo contest with with Wild Sunflower photographs.

February 11, 2009. The UT Gardens have been recognized as an official 'Conifer References Garden' by the American Conifer Society (ACS). This prestigious status acknowledges the significance of the UT Garden's conifer collection and makes the UT Gardens eligible for regional ACS grants that can be used to expand the collection, interpretive signage, educational programs and brochures.

. Bob Conger was recognized for a Plant Variety Protection Patent for “Persist” orchard grass. This patent represents 50 years of discovery and plant breeding work. Persist, which does exactly what its name says, outperforms other cool-season orchard grass varieties. In Kentucky, it was the top producer in yield trials at two locations for two years. It is now being grown in the U.S. and recently was adopted in Argentina, which is known for producing premium quality beef.

January 29, 2009. Dr. Annette Wszelaki, UT Extension commercial vegetable production specialist, coordinates a team of AgResearch and Extension professionals and graduate students working on a new Organic and Sustainable Crop Production program which is featured on the front page of the January 27 issue of the Knoxville News Sentinel. The statewide initiative is aimed at involving more Tennessee farmers in organic production.

January 20, 2009 Dustin Lewis, and Javier Vargas.. Congratulations to graduate student Dustin Lewis (Advisors: S. McElroy and J. Sorochan) who was awarded 1st Place for the  Outstanding Graduate Student Oral Presentation entitled “Efficacy of Aryloxyphenoxypropionate Herbicides for Bermudagrass Control in Zoysiagrass Fairways” (Dustin F. Lewis, J. Scott McElroy, John C. Sorochan, James T. Brosnan, Gregory K. Breeden) at the 63rd Annual Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS) held in Baltimore, MD.  Dustin also placed 2nd  for his photo submission: “White Clover on Frosty Morning”.  Graduate student Javier Vargas (Advisor: G.
