ABOUT THE PROGRAM

ANR 491 - England/Ireland Garden Tour is an exciting study abroad oppotunity that will be offered during the Summer of 2007 through the University of Tennessee. The tour will focus on visiting nearly 26 different gardens and cultural sites in Ireland and England.

This is an opportunity for students to have fun, explore, and learn how the historical gardens of Ireland and England reflect the climate, topography, history, philosophy, social structure, art and politics at the time of their creation.

Students will have the to opportunity to learn:
  • How the culture, environment, and history present during the time of creation had an influence on the development of international gardens.
  • The history (art, music, religion, politics, and class distinctions) of a foreign culture.
  • New attitudes and behaviors to foster an appreciation for unfamiliar cultures.
  • Plants of international gardens.
The course will focus on the observation of local plant material, the study of different garden and landscape design styles, and will foster an appreciation of foreign cultures. This course is open to all majors but is limited to 25 participants and horticultural knowledge is not a prerequisite.
