Eight of our students were awarded scholarships to attend the 2007 Cullowhee Conference: Native Plants in the Landscape, July 18-21, Western Carolina University. Each scholarship covers the registration, on-campus room and meals, and some may include a day long field trip. They range in value from $250 to $385 each. Our students submitted letters of interest accompanied by a letter of support from a faculty member. Modest in cost and spanning 3 to 4 days, the conference has not only a regional but national following. The quality of the program is excellent, and the speakers are leaders in areas of botany, horticulture, and landscape design using native plants in gardening and ecological restoration. Students always enjoy the experience, and for many years we have dominated the field of scholarship recipients. Students and faculty alike grow professionally and academically by attending.
The purpose of the Cullowhee Conference is to increase interest in and knowledge of propagating and preserving native southeastern plant species in the landscape. Past participants of the conference have included landscape architects, commercial nursery operators, garden club members, botanists, and horticulturists from state highway departments, universities, native plant societies, botanical gardens, and arboretums. Both professionals and laypersons will gain valuable knowledge from the informative fieldtrips, lectures and workshops.
