The UT Public Horticulture Team is made up of faculty members in the Plant Sciences Department as well as several graduate students. The following is a list of people involved with public horticulture at the University of Tennessee. Click on each name for additional information.

  Susan Hamilton
Dr. Hamilton provides leadership to the public horticulture program through classroom instruction and advising both undergraduate and graduate students, and is also the director of the University of Tennessee Gardens.

  Stephen Garton

Dr. Garton is the Extension specialist in nursury production and landscape maintenance and is conducting research into the feasibility of new ornamental enterprises for Tennessee.

Public Horticulture Graduate Students

Natalia Bjorklund
Natalia received her B.S. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she majored in Horticulture with an emphasis in Landscape Design. Upon graduation in May, 2002, she completed a summer internship with Powell Gardens, just outside of Kansas City, Missouri. She then accepted a year-long intership with Stonecrop Gardens of Cold Spring, New York. Natalia entered the graduate public horticulture program at UT in January, 2004, and has begun to focus on a future career in public horticulture administration.
Susan Conlon
Susan received a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design in 2002. Upon graduation, Susan worked as a Horticulturist at Cheekwood Botanic Garden in Nashville, TN. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Public Horticulture, studying under Dr. Susan Hamilton, and is thrilled about the many opportunities for study and hands-on learning here at UT. Her interests include historic landscape preservation, people-plant relationships, garden design with an emphasis on color displays, and volunteering.
Emily Smith
Emily received her B.S. degree in Landscape Horticulture from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois in 2002. During these four years, valuable experience was gained through horticultural internships at Missouri Botanical Gardens and Callaway Gardens. Emily is currently pursuing a Masters in public horticulture, studying under Drs. Susan Hamilton and Stephen Garton. She hopes to contribute to the field of public horticulture through active research in people-plant relations.
Jeff Webb
Jeff enrolled at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2002 in the OHLD Department, seeking an Master's Degree with a concentration in Public Horticulture
He currently teaches PSLS 110 Introduction to Ornamental Horticulture and PSLS 370 Grounds Maintenance while taking classes for his Master's.
Jeff's thesis topic is Best Management Practices for a Woody Plant Collection in a Public Garden in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6 and 7.
