Vigorous writing is concise.  A sentence should contain no unnecessary words,
a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing
should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.
This requires not that the writer make all sentences short, or avoid all detail
and treat subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.

Horticultural Internet Technology, offered by the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee, deals with the creation of information resources for Web delivery. Following the fall 2007 semester, the course will be renamed to Horticultural Internet Communication, to reflect its focus on writing.

Objectives are three-fold:
      To hone communication skills,
To learn to create and serve web sites,
To increase knowledge of a particular horticultural, turfgrass, agricultural or biological expertise.

The course was developed for the Department of Plant Science's horticulture curriculum and somewhat maintains that orientation in terms of examples used in the course (horticulture and IT). What students learn here can be applied to essentially any discipline. We welcome students from all areas of agriculture and biology.

Web-delivery encompasses many aspects of professional communication: writing, organizing, working with images and layouts, streaming audio and video. We will also cover oral and paper comunication.

PLSC 448 is designated WC by the university, and satisfies that third WC requirement (see page 1 of Gen Ed requirements).
