Landscape Students Show Work at Exbibition

Tony Clark, Johnson Bullard and Valerie Friedmann entered their work in the 2007 Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement. Their posters and live presentations on the evening of March 29 were impressive, with Valerie winning a College award for: The Queener Residence: Design Solutions for a Residential Landscape.

Based on principles of landscaping with environmental awareness, this entry by UT Plant Sciences student, Tony Clark, serves as a model master landscape design presented in plan view. The project, assigned and suitably named by UT Associate Professor, Sam Rogers ASLA as "Earthgood Residence" demonstrates proper practices of sustainability in the home landscape relative to energy conservation, water quality, recycling, wildlife, and other environmental concerns.

The Friends of the UT Gardens asked for assistance in redesigning the entrance to the gardens. Over the years the existing entrance had become univiting and unsafe in areas. Garry Menendez offered the talents of his advanced design students which turned into a competition of sorts. Each of the 14 students in the class prepared a master plan design. Johnson's design was one of two selected for further consideration. Ultimately, top prize went to another student due to budget constraints. Construction has now begun to renovate the entrance for the comfort and pleasure of future visitors.
