Hamilton Sue. 1996. Evaluations of Herbaceous Plants
From January 1996 through May, 750 different annual, perennial and herb species were grown in teaching and research greenhouse #14. During the last 2 weeks of April, selected species were transported by OHLD and planted at the WTES, MTES, Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, and the ETSU campus. The week of May 1st, all 750 species were planted on the KAES. Evaluations of each species were made at each experiment station in mid July, August, and September to determine species performance throughout the growing season. Evaluations included flower production, height uniformity, flower uniformity, pest resistance, and overall rating. Subjective ratings of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor were used for each evaluation. Annual evaluations ceased after the middle of September while perennial flower and herb evaluations will continue through next spring to determine winter hardiness. Summaries of species evaluations were distributed to supporting seed companies as well as at commercial grower meetings. Field Days/Open Houses were held at all four trial sites during the month of June and July. Scheduled tours and lectures were held at each field day. Spring flowering and performance data was collected in April on the 120 pansy cultivars planted in the fall of 1995. Data collected included flower color, height, width, overall performance and subjective comments upon pest resistance, winter hardiness, and overall consumer appeal. For the summer and fall trials, $4166 was donated from various seed co. |
